The British Retail Consortium Global Standards (BRCGS) has recently revised its Food Safety Standard, specifically updating the requirements for unannounced audits under Food Issue 9, effective August 1, 2024. These changes are crucial for certified sites to understand and implement.
Key Updates on Unannounced Audits
1. Audit Frequency and Timing:
Sites must now have an unannounced audit every three years within the four-month window prior to their re-audit due date. This ensures audits occur under normal operating conditions without prior notice.
2. Restrictions on Certification Body Changes:
Sites cannot change their certification body within the last four months before the re-audit due date unless agreed upon with BRCGS through a formal concession process. This policy helps maintain consistency in the audit process.
3. Site Responsibilities:
It is the site’s responsibility to ensure all requirements for the unannounced audit are met, including making necessary arrangements with the certification body well in advance. Sites must also inform the certification body of any changes that could impact the audit, like maintenance shutdowns.
4. Consequences of Non-Compliance:
Failing to adequately prepare for the unannounced audit could lead to the audit being delayed, potentially resulting in certificate expiration and major nonconformities, which could have serious implications.
Certified sites should review these updates and adjust their audit preparation processes to ensure compliance. Proper planning and communication with your certification body are essential to maintaining certification and meeting industry food safety standards.
